COLUMBIA, Mo. — A hydrogen gas explosion inside a University of Missouri biochemistry lab has injured four people. Authorities say one victim had life-threatening injuries.

The blast happened after 2 p.m. Monday on the third floor of Schweitzer Hall on the Columbia campus.

Columbia Fire Captain Eric Hartman says the cause of the explosion and the resulting small fire remains under investigation.

The names of the injured were not immediately released. A campus spokesman says he doesn’t know if they were professors, students or graduate researchers.

One campus worker told The Associated Press she heard the explosion several blocks away. The building where the blast occurred had blown-out windows and melted window blinds.
