Gas leak capped at Hollywood restaurant

The Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

HOLLYWOOD — A gas leak at a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino restaurant Tuesday morning prompted an evacuation of several people, said Battalion Chief Mark Steele, a Hollywood fire-rescue spokesman.

The department received the call of a heavy smell of gas at the Jazziz Bistro, 5751 Seminole Way, about 9 a.m., Steele said. A hazardous materials team was sent to cap the leak and ventilate the building.

When the team arrived, it found the gas pilot light off - an indicator of grave danger.

“If the pilot light goes out and the gas fills up the building, that’s just like a bomb,” Steele said.

The team shut off the gas to the building, evacuated adjacent businesses and called TECO Gas Co. to make the repairs.

No one was injured.
