62-year-old firefighter cadet dies during training

The cadet collapsed during training and was rushed to the hospital

LEAGUE CITY, Texas — Donald Mize, 62, a cadet with the League City Volunteer Fire Department collapsed during training Wednesday night. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mize was a retired teacher who begain training with as a League City Volunteer Fire Department cadet in February, according to a department release.

“This is a very tragic loss for the family, the City and the entire community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mize family and the League City Volunteer Fire Department, “ said Mayor Tim Paulissen.

The City of League City staff and elected officials will be wearing red and black ribbons in honor of Mize and city flags will be lowered to half-staff.

No funeral arrangements have been made yet.
