LODD: Miss. firefighter dies after fire response

John Shoup was taken to the hospital and treated for a heart attack; he later succumbed to his injury

ASHLAND, Miss. — A firefighter died Sunday after leaving the scene of a structure fire on March 7.

U.S. Fire Administration reported that firefighter John Shoup, 38, with the Ashland (Miss.) Volunteer Fire Department, complained he wasn’t feeling well at the fire scene and went home.

Several hours after returning home, his wife took him to the hospital where he was treated for a heart attack and his condition stabilized.

He was transferred to another hospital, where he later succumbed to his injury.

He was a 20-year fire service veteran.

Funeral services are pending.
