Neb. firefighter collapses, dies on fire scene

Numerous attempts were made to revive 42-year-old Firefighter Andrew Zalme

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. — A Dakota City Fire and Rescue volunteer collapsed and died while preparing to leave the scene of a fire Thursday evening, a release from city officials said.

Emergency responders on the scene made numerous attempts to revive Andrew “Andy” Zalme without success, the release said. The exact cause of death wasn’t known and will require medical tests.

Zalme, 42, a longtime member of the department, was with crews that had responded to a fire on Highway 35. The Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association said in a statement he will be greatly missed by the organization and the city.
