NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A firefighter diagnosed with a rare bleeding disorder is fighting for his life.

WKBW.com reported that Richard Reeves, who has been a volunteer firefighter with Sweeney Hose Fire Company for 25 years, was diagnosed with Acquired Hemophilia A in March.

“It was kind of a shock,” Reeves’ son, Rob, said. “I guess you don’t really expect it. He’s something you see as your knight in shining armor.”

Treatments are expensive and Reeves has spent a lot of time in the hospital – one stay lasted a month.

“We knew he was going to have to battle,” fellow firefighter Joe Lavey said. “We didn’t know it was going to be this severe.”

The fire company is planning a fundraiser for Reeves and has also set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses.
