SAN DIEGO — When Selena Laniel isn’t battling fires, she’s out “ninjaing.”
Laniel, a San Diego firefighter, will appear on NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” for the fourth time, reported NBC San Diego. Contestants on the show run, jump, hang and balance their way through an obstacle course. Laniel was approached by the show five years ago, and has been competing since; the upcoming season will air later this month.
Laniel said while she has a passion for firefighting, she enjoys doing “ninja stuff.”
“I don’t even know if we have a name for it. I just call it ‘ninjaing,’” Laniel said. “I’m going to go and play and do some ninja stuff.”
She said there are many similarities between firefighting and competing on the show.
“Firefighting is very mental. You have to be able to make split decisions,” Laniel said. “The course is kind of that way. When you show up, and you’ve got the lights in your face, it’s really stressful.”
Laniel encourages others to pursue their passion.
“I think that if you put heart and soul into it, anything can happen,” she said.
