NEW MILFORD, N.J. — A firefighter suffered a heart attack while en route to a call Thursday.

NJ.com reported that the unidentified firefighter from New Milford Volunteer Fire Department was in a fire truck en route to a water leak call when he collapsed, according to Fire Chief Ross Rhein.

Colleagues used a defibrillator and performed CPR before transporting the firefighter to a hospital.

“He was immediately transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where they were able to regain a pulse and independent breathing,” Chief Rhein said.

Chief Rhein said the firefighter is in the ICU, but remains stable.

“We are not out of the woods yet, but there have been many positive initial signs and we pray for a full recovery,” Chief Rhein said.
