INDIANAPOLIS — A firefighter died Monday of an apparent heart attack after completing an annual physical fitness test.
Indy Star reported that Lawrence Fire Department firefighter Jeffrey Holt, 60, had just passed the fitness test when he suffered a medical seizure, according to Chief Dino Batalis.
Paramedics that were already on scene rushed to treat Holt, using an AED and administering drugs before transporting him to a hospital, where he later died.
The department said Holt became a member in 1996, according to FOX59.
In his time with the department, he served as a lieutenant, training chief, engineer and deputy chief of operations. The department said he had plans to retire in two years.
Holt is the first Lawrence firefighter to die in the line of duty. Mayor Steve Collier ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor.
