LODD: NJ firefighter dies of heart attack

Firefighter Thomas Miserendino, 71, fell ill during a Memorial Day parade; he was taken to a hospital, discharged and later suffered a heart attack at home

BEACHWOOD, N.J. — A firefighter who fell ill during a parade on Memorial Day succumbed to his injuries and died June 4.

The U.S. Fire Administration reported that firefighter Thomas D. Miserendino, 71, with the Beachwood (N.J.) Volunteer Fire Company, was participating in the fire department’s annual Memorial Day ceremony and parade when other members observed that something was wrong with him.

EMS responded and transported him to a hospital for care. He was admitted for cardiac treatment and was discharged the next day. A few hours after returning home, he suffered an apparent heart attack and was transferred by EMS back to the hospital.

Firefighter Miserendino remained there for treatment, but his condition gradually worsened and he died at the hospital.

He was a 44-year fire service veteran, a Vietnam veteran and a senior chief in the U.S. Navy.

He’s survived by his wife, three daughters and four grandchildren.
