The Wilmette (Ill.) Fire Department responded to a house fire on the west side of town. First-in units found heavy black smoke and lots of fire coming out most windows and the entire back of the house. One fire department member saw a woman in the second-floor window; she would not jump. A ladder was placed in the window, but the woman would not exit, so a firefighter climbed up the ladder and pulled her out. Only moments later, the whole room flashed, and heavy fire came out the same window. Command requested a working fire to bring in more companies. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 2 hours.
