ATLANTA — Authorities say an Atlanta firefighter was seriously hurt when a driver hydroplaned and hit him as he responded to a crash on an interstate.

News outlets report the firefighter was responding to a rollover crash on Interstate 85 northbound around 7:30 a.m. Sunday when the car hit him as he exited the driver’s side of the fire engine.

The 47-year-old sergeant’s name was not immediately released, but Atlanta Fire Chief Randall Slaughter said he is a father and a seven-year veteran of the department. Slaughter says the firefighter’s legs were injured and that he was in “very, very serious but stable condition.”

Police say the driver is in custody and they expect charges will be filed.
