BREMERTON, Wash. — A Washington state firefighter was injured after he was pinned between a car and a police cruiser while responding to a call about a possibly impaired driver on Saturday.

The Bremerton firefighter, whose name was not released but was said to be a 50-year-old man and 20-year veteran of the department, was preparing to perform a medical evaluation of a driver who had struck a parked car when the driver’s car suddenly reversed, according to the Kitsap Sun.

The firefighter became pinned between the car and a parked police cruiser, suffering injuries to his leg, officials said. He was flown to the hospital for treatment and underwent surgery on his leg Sunday, according to Bremerton Assistant Fire Chief John Payne.

“No call can ever be considered ‘routine’ and we strive to maintain a high level of situational awareness, but often the situations we respond remain unpredictable,” Bremerton Firefighter’s Union, IAFF Local 437 wrote in a Facebook post Sunday.
