WATERTOWN, N.Y. — The city fire chief has identified the two firefighters injured in Thursday’s training accident and said they have both been released from the hospital.

Fire Chief Matthew R. Timerman said Tuesday afternoon that the two firefighters injured were Capt. Greg French and Firefighter Pete Rose.

The accident occurred on the corner of Arch and Newell streets in the city on Thursday.

The firefighters will be out of work “for an extended period” Timerman said.

He said firefighters were using a 5-inch supply line and a manifold appliance — which allows them to hook one large hose into three smaller hoses — when it became unstable and struck the two firefighters.

“It basically splits one water hose into three smaller lines,” he said.

The fire chief said the department is looking into how the problem started.

“We’re definitely going to be looking to make sure that the situation doesn’t occur again,” Timerman said.

He said it’s hard to find what exactly went wrong and they are still talking with people who were on the scene.

Both firefighters are home recovering, Timerman said.

The fire chief extended his thanks to Guilfoyle Ambulance.

He said they were there within a minute.

“Granted they’re right next door, but I was very appreciative of their extremely rapid response time and the care that they provided to our guys,” Timerman said.
