QUEBEC, Canada — A firefighter died Tuesday after being struck by a ventilation shaft while battling a blaze.

CBC reported that 10-year veteran Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac volunteer firefighter Carmel Moreault, 54, was battling a blaze at a cardboard box plant when the water-filled ventilation shaft fell on him.

Moreault was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

“My sympathies go out to [Mr. Moreault’s] family and friends and to his colleagues, because they are a family as well,” Mayor Gilles Garon said.

“Our brother, we can promise you one thing, it’s that even if the story changed last night, when the call is going to ring again, we’re going back for you and with you,” the fire department said on Facebook. “Watch over us, your brother and sister firefighters as we will now watch over yours that you left too quickly.”
