‘A true legend in the fire service': Ariz. firefighter dies while on duty

MESA, Ariz. — A veteran Mesa firefighter died Tuesday while on duty, the city confirmed.

Mark Keller, who served with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department for 35 years, was found deceased during his shift, 12 News reports. He began his career with the department in 1990. Officials have not released a cause of death.

“It is with a heavy heart that our department shares that this morning, Firefighter Mark Keller was found passed away while on duty. We ask everyone to keep the Keller family in their thoughts today and support each other as we navigate this loss,” the Mesa Fire and Medical Department said in a statement.

Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman, a retired Mesa Fire captain paramedic who once served alongside Keller, reflected on his colleague’s decades of service.

“Mark and I served together for many years, and I had the privilege of witnessing his dedication to our community firsthand,” Freeman said. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Keller family, his crew and all members of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department. Mark’s legacy will continue to inspire us all.”

The United Mesa Fire Fighters IAFF Local 2260 shared a tribute on social media, writing, “A true legend in the fire service has left us.”
