CalFire pilot dies on duty in firehouse

He was found dead while inside his barracks last week; he was a pilot for almost 16 years

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Flags will be flown at half-staff at the state capitol to honor a longtime CalFire helicopter pilot who died while on duty last week.

The Associated Press reported that CalFire pilot Jerold “Jerry” Bonner, 72, was found dead inside his barracks Friday. He served with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for almost 16 years.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and co-workers as they deal with their loss,” California Gov. Jerry Brown said.

Bonner was a U.S. Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
