CONWAY, S.C. — Fellow firefighters from across the country have been reaching out to the Conway Fire Department following the death of firefighter Christopher Ray.
Live5News.com reported the Firefighters Assistance and Support Team is working with the department to help firefighters process Ray’s death. Ray died after being struck by a fire truck while responding to a house fire on Sunday.
“Firefighters, EMS, police, it is a very tight-knit community,” said Mike Medeiros with FAST. “We’re in the type of business where we are out to fix people and help people. A lot of times it’s hard for us to handle the fact we become a part of the situation, too.”
Firefighters in nearby counties are pitching in to help cover shifts so their brothers and sisters at the department can take time away to heal as needed.
“Any possibility, anything can happen. But when it actually does happen, there comes that feeling that is just overcoming,” Medeiros said. “It’s really hard to explain. You’re just in shock.”
