DAKOTA CITY, Neb. — “As we finally got the fire to extinguish, he was driving another vehicle and we were washing down the edge of the road and he asked me to check him out in the ambulance. His vitals didn’t come up very well and at that time, while I was talking to him he collapsed in front of me,” remembers Pat Moore, the Dakota City Asst. Fire Chief

Some of 42 year old Andrew Zalme’s final moments were spent doing what he loved, fighting fires. Surrounded by his fellow firefighters, the crew did everything to try to revive him. But what his wife says was a sudden heart attack, cut his life short.

“When you work on a friend it’s very difficult, you don’t ever expect to do that. You work a little harder,” said Moore, who did CPR and worked on Zalme all the way to the hospital.
