JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A member of the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department has died from COVID-19.

Lt. Mario J. Moya, a 17-year veteran of the department, died after contracting the virus while on duty, JFRD announced in a statement on social media.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the line of duty death of JFRD Lieutenant Mario J. Moya of Rescue-42-B,” the statement read. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Lieutenant Moya unselfishly served this community while continually exposing himself to the very virus that cost him his life.”

Moya is survived by his wife and three children, Bobby, Bella and MJ.
