NEW BERN, N.C. — A 92-year-old volunteer firefighter died Dec. 15 after succumbing to injuries from a car crash on Oct. 20.
Firefighter Sidney “Sid” Winer, with the No. 7 Township (N.C.) Fire Rescue, was riding in a department-issued Ford F150 returning from picking up equipment at the time of the crash. Another vehicle pulled out in front of his truck, and Winer sustained serious fractures to both feet. The truck was totaled.
As a result his injuries, his right leg was amputated just below the knee on Dec. 3. Firefighter Winer was in a rehab center when he died.
Firefighter Winer was a 14-year veteran.
