MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A 26-year fire service veteran died Wednesday after firefighters found him unresponsive.
Lt. John Burns, 50, was found in his bed at the Myrtle Beach Fire Department station in the morning, the U.S. Fire Administration reported. He was pronounced dead of what appears to be natural causes.
Lt. Burns had responded to one or more emergency alarms earlier during his shift.
He began his career with the department in July 1988, was an active member of the Pee Dee Regional Urban Search and Rescue Team, United States Air Force Veteran and a S.C. state certified fire instructor, FirefighterCloseCalls reported.
