La Grange, N.C. — Captain David Holmes, 51, of the La Grange Volunteer Fire Department died on Feb. 28, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

The town council member and former fire chief had breathing problems while responding to a brush fire on Feb. 20. He was transported to a hospital where he was placed on life support. Holmes was removed from life support on Feb. 28.

The nature of death was a heart attack.

Holmes served as chief of the La Grange Fire Department from 2000 through 2010.

A procession of fire and law enforcement vehicles took his body home to La Grange on March 3, WITN reported.

“He loved this town. He loved the La Grange Volunteer Fire Department and every member on it, and I really consider it an honor as many others do I’m sure to be able to call him friend,” said David Letchworth, retired La Grange firefighter.
