ANTIOCH TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A member of the Colfax-Greenwood Fire Department was in stable condition at a Traverse City hospital after receiving injuries from an explosion during a fire response here, officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, to a “fully-involved pole barn fire” on North 19 Road in Wexford County’s Antioch Township, about 15 miles northwest of Cadillac, the Colfax-Greenwood Fire Department reported in a statement on its Facebook page.

“A defensive attack was in the process of being set up when an extremely large explosion happened,” the report stated.

A “mayday” call was placed for more resources after responders discovered a firefighter was injured, the report stated.

“Firefighters were shaken to their core and rendered care to their fallen brother,” the report stated.

The firefighter — who was not named in the report — was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where he was listed in stable condition, the report stated.

“We are praying for a full recovery,” stated the report, which was signed by Fire Chief Jason Nelson. “Thankful for the rapid response from our neighboring fire department.”

Firefighters eventually doused the fire and left the scene around 5 a.m. Saturday, officials said. The cause of the fire was unknown.
