OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Police say a racial slur was hurled at a child by a firefighter at a restaurant.
A witness told KCTV5.com that he was “dumbfounded” by the firefighter’s statement to the child.
“He basically said get that little ‘blank’ up off the floor,” the witness recalled. “The n-word started to get thrown around.”
The preschool-aged child, according to the witness, wandered away from his family during a birthday party. When another family member went to go get the child, the witness said that’s when the firefighter used a racial slur and spat on the child.
“I didn’t catch what the officer said to him, but his immediate response was, ‘It’s OK, I’m a firefighter,’ like that was supposed to blanket cover everything for him,” the witness said.
Police are still speaking with family members and witnesses concerning the incident. The firefighter could be charged with battery and making a criminal threat, according to the report.
