LAREDO, Texas — A Laredo firefighter is in serious condition after crashing his motorcycle early Friday in north Laredo, authorities said.

Ricardo Castillo, 48, was taken to Doctors Hospital with head trauma and internal injuries, according to Laredo police. He was later airlifted to San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Laredo Fire Department Chief Steve E. Landin said Castillo has been with the department for almost 18 years.

“He remains in our thoughts and prayers. The Fire Department stands next to him through his recovery. We will do everything possible to help him. We are a family,” Landin said.

The LPD crash team was called out at 2:37 a.m. to investigate a case reported in the 7000 block of San Dario Avenue.

Castillo, who was off duty, was driving a 2006 Swift Motorcycle when he failed to control speed when turning and stuck a signal pole, according to police

An LPD report states Castillo was thrown from the motorcycle and landed on a cement island.

LPD’s crash team is following up on the case.
