MERRITT, N.C. — A person and two animals were found dead inside a stable after a fire at the structure, according to North Carolina officials.

Emergency crews responded to the fire at Fulcher’s Red Fox Stables in Merritt early in the morning of June 12, according to a post on the Pamlico County Emergency Management’s Facebook page.

A 911 call was placed at about 1 a.m., according to WCTI12.

Local departments arrived on the scene and requested assistance from multiple other agencies, according to Pamlico County Emergency Management. A person and several animals were unaccounted for during the fire.

After firefighters extinguished the blaze, the bodies of one person and two animals were found inside the stable, according to the agency.

The person had not yet been identified as of the 9:30 a.m. update from Pamlico County Emergency Management.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating, according to Pamlico County Emergency Management.

The Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office and Pamlico County Emergency Management did not respond to requests for information from McClatchy News.

Merritt is about 140 miles southeast of Raleigh.
