AUBURN, Maine — A heavy fire ripped through an Auburn apartment building on Sunday night.

The fire broke out about 10:11 p.m. at a construction site on Mount Auburn Avenue , where work was underway on two apartment buildings, according to the Auburn Fire Department.

More than 100 first responders from 13 departments kept the fire from spreading from the east to the west apartment building, as well as surrounding properties.

Construction began at the site in January 2023 , and work on the 102 apartments was nearing completion until the fire broke out, according to the Sun Journal .

The apartments weren’t occupied.

Jason Kambitsis , the president of A.R. Building , the developer behind the Auburn complex, told the Bangor Daily News on Monday morning that work will continue on the second apartment building, which will be completed early next year.

When asked whether the destroyed building will be rebuilt, Kambitsis said that, “We will assess all the damage and continue to move forward and we have no plans to change what we’re doing.”

The fire remains under investigation.

Mount Auburn Avenue will remain closed to through traffic from BJ’s to Gracelawn Road until further notice, according to the fire department.
