CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and West Virginia first responders are among the lowest paid in the country, according to an MSN study.

The study ranked salary ranges among first responders in the United States, LaramieLive.com reported.

Washington ranked first in annual wages where EMTs and paramedics earn an average of $66,000; firefighters earn an average of $74,000; and police officers earn $78,000. California, New Jersey, Hawaii and New York round out the top five.

Mississippi ranks the lowest in the nation, where EMTs earn an average of $33,000; firefighters earn $30,000; and police officers earn $36,000. Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and West Virginia round out the bottom five states.
