GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — Glynn County police are investigating the death of a county firefighter after he was found Tuesday evening suffering from a gunshot wound.

Todd R. Thompson Jr., 19, was found in the driver’s seat of a vehicle at 6029 Habersham St. after officers and county Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a call that someone was suffering from a gunshot wound.

He succumbed to his injuries at the scene, a release from the county police said.

The release said investigators who processed the scene collected a handgun and interviewed witnesses.

A determination on the manner of death had not been made as of Thursday afternoon.

The Glynn County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit and Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiners are investigating further, the release said.

According to the GBI’s Division of Forensic Sciences, there are five options Georgia medical examiners and coroners consider when determining manner of death — homicide, natural causes, accidental causes, suicide or undetermined.

Thompson began working for the Glynn County Fire Department on Sept. 11, 2022.

“Glynn County Fire Rescue is deeply saddened by the loss of firefighter Todd Thompson Jr.,” said Vinnie DiCristofalo, county fire chief. “Although serving with us for just over one year, Todd grew up in our department and in this community. Glynn County Fire Rescue and the entire Glynn County public safety community mourn his tragic loss.”

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with more information can call the police department at 912-554-7802 or 912-554-3645.
