SAN DIEGO — Crews worked for hours overnight into Monday morning to rescue two spelunkers trapped in a cave east of San Diego, authorities said.
Jim Ness from San Diego and Brett Colvin from Escondido, Calif., became stuck in a narrow passageway 200 feet from the entrance of Thunder Canyon Cave, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday.
Rescuers from the San Diego and San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, the Bureau of Land Management, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the U. S. Border Patrol’s Borstar Unit worked through Sunday night and freed Colvin around 3:34 a.m. Monday.
Ness was freed shortly thereafter.
Colvin and Ness were airlifted to the Campo Indian Reservation where they were treated for hypothermia, the North County Times reported.
