RIVERDALE, Utah — A bypass code helped firefighters rescue a 4-year-old boy who had locked himself inside a gun safe at a sporting goods store.
Riverdale firefighters didn’t have to resort to Plan B or Plan C in getting the boy out of the safe, reported the Desert News.
“We didn’t cut. We didn’t drill. We didn’t do anything other than keep him calm. I had my EMTs talking to him and assessing him. We were also putting some oxygen into the safe just to make sure and assessing him as well to make sure he was OK. Other than crying and being really scared, he was never really in any danger,” said Capt. David Ermer.
The boy had entered the unlocked safe at the Sportman’s Warehouse sporting goods store and closed the door behind him. Unfortunately, employees did not know the combination.
Firefighters obtained the bypass code from the safe’s manufacturer. Rescuers worked with a local locksmith to free the boy.
He was evaluated by EMTs after the ordeal but did not require medical care.
“It was an interesting case because we prepare oftentimes for very odd scenarios utilizing cars or trains, rail cars or trenches or things like that. Rarely do we ever consider a gun safe,” Ermer told the Desert News.
