LORAIN, Ohio — An off-duty Lorain firefighter happened to be a block away July 13 from the Charles Berry Bascule Bridge area in Lorain when he received notice that a fisherman had fallen into the Black River.

At 11:30 a.m., Firefighter Christopher Bennett was driving in his vehicle when he saw the text and headed to the dock area near River Side Park, said Lorain fire Capt. Frank Griffith.

Bennett was able to locate the man and grab his arms.

The man held on to Bennett’s wrists until the on-duty firefighters could get to the scene, Griffith said.

The man was experiencing medical issues which caused weakness, so the fire crews used a ladder to help the man out of the water, Griffith said.

“Our guys, both the off-duty and on-duty, did good,” he said. “I’m proud of them.”

Bennett is a 23-year veteran of the Lorain Fire Department.
