RACINE, Wis. — The Racine Fire Department responded to a house fire early Sunday morning that sent four people to the hospital.

RFD was dispatched at 3:34 a.m. to the 1200 block of Virginia Street.

One adult and three children were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to an RFD news release.

Firefighters rescued two children from the basement and one child escaped the house on their own, the release said.

No fire personnel were injured.

The fire was deemed under control within 49 minutes, according to RFD.

The basement sustained moderate fire and smoke damage, and the first floor suffered light smoke damage.

RFD estimated structural damage at $85,000 and contents damage at $18,000.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

There were no working smoke alarms found in the home, but there was one working carbon monoxide alarm, according to the release.

RFD recommends installing working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on each level of a home at minimum, and ideally in every room.
