MANCHESTER, N.H. — The Fire Department drained a North End pond Sunday in search of a nearby resident’s dog, but turned up no sign of the missing puppy.
The lost puppy was feared to have fallen through the icy pond, located off of High Ridge Road. The pond was drained overnight and searched by fire fighters. The puppy was not there, said Fire Chief James Burkush, and is now presumed stolen.
It is not unusual for the fire department to respond to calls of animals falling through the ice, Burkush said.
“If we don’t respond people will respond on their own and get themselves in trouble,” he said. “In cases like this we will send the company up to do whatever tasks should be taken, as long as it’s not extremely dangerous to the firefighters or it’s putting off high priority call.”
Burkush said he was contacted about the dog by Mayor Ted Gatsas, who lives near the North End pond.
“He asked for advice on what to do,” said Burkush. “We receive calls, I’ve received calls from aldermen and other city officials on a regular basis. A lot of times it’s the first thing people do is call the mayor or their aldermen.”
