Va. firefighter charged with DUI after fire engine overturns en route to call

The Smithfield firefighter was the lone occupant of Engine 52 when it overturned responding to a possible structure fire

SMITHFIELD, Va. — A Smithfield firefighter faces charges after being accused of driving under the influence while operating a fire engine.

On Sept. 21, Engine 52 overturned while responding to a possible structure fire on Lakeview Cove. Officials say the driver, 31-year-old William Collins, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and later released, WAVY reported. Smith was the only person in the fire engine.

On Oct. 6, Virginia State Police confirmed Collins faces charges in connection with the crash, including failure to drive on the right side of the center of the highway and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department said it will continue to cooperate with Virginia State Police on the investigation and will also conduct an internal administrative and safety review.

The department said it takes the matter seriously and remains committed to the safety of its members and the public.
