ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Wednesday night people are calling for greater oversight of volunteer fire departments after a former chief was charged with embezzling nearly $20,000.

Leaders said the former chief at the Scotch Irish Volunteer Fire Department was using a station credit card for his personal use between 2010 and 2012, but no one noticed the charges until last month.

Leaders said for roughly two years former Chief Jesse Hoshall used the fire station credit card to purchase anything he wanted. Warrants claim he charged up a balance of $19,872. That’s nearly half of the $43,921 the department brought in during the 2014-15 tax year. The department is audited each year, but somehow missed the alleged illegal purchases until last month. That’s when the new fire chief asked for a closer look into the finances.
