WASHINGTON — During his speech Tuesday to a joint session of Congress, President Donald Trump highlighted the story of an Alabama steelworker who has worked at the same plant for nearly three decades while serving as a volunteer firefighter captain, fathering seven children and fostering more than 40 others.

Decatur resident and Nucor Steel employee Jeff Denard, who attended the speech as a guest of First Lady Melania Trump, was greeted with cheers as Trump detailed his story in the House chamber.

The president shared Denard’s story while outlining his tariff policy.

Trump noted Denard has been working at the same steel plant for 27 years while serving as a volunteer firefighter captain.

Denard also has seven children and has cared for more than 40 foster children.

While drawing applause, the Decatur resident held up a raised fist in appreciation.

“Stories like Jeff’s remind us that tariffs are not just about American jobs. They’re about protecting the soul of our country,” the president said.

“Tariffs are about making America rich again and making America great again, and it’s happening and it will happen rather quickly. There will be a little disturbance, but we’re OK with that. It won’t be much,” Trump said.

The president then expressed his gratitude to Denard.

“Jeff, I want to thank you very much,” Trump said.
