Fire dept. donates defective fire hoses to NJ zoo

Firefighter: “Rather than discard it and pollute a landfill, the hose is finding a second life.”

LYNDHURST, N.J. — For the average onlooker during a fire, not much attention is paid to the high-pressure hose that is expected to function properly. The firefighters pull it out, connect to a hydrant and do what they do best. To ensure their success and safety, these hoses are tested annually.

And after one of their hoses failed an annual safety test, the Lyndhurst Fire Department donated the defected hose to the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange through Hose2Habitat.

Hose2Habitat is a nonprofit organization that partners fire departments and other organizations that have a surplus of fire hoses and recyclable material with zoos and animal sanctuaries to repurpose the donated equipment to benefit animal habitats.
