Mont. fire truck collides with minivan on way to fire

The Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. — A fire truck responding to a grass fire in the Helena Valley collided with a minivan this afternoon, seriously injuring the minivan’s driver.

The fire on Griffin Drive was reported at about 2:45 p.m. It burned grass, a woodpile and a large shed.

A West Valley Fire Department fire truck was on its way to the blaze when it collided with a minivan. Firefighters at the scene said the truck hit the minivan after the minivan ran a stop sign.

The woman driving the minivan was taken by ambulance to St. Peter’s hospital. The firefighter driving the truck suffered minor injuries to his hand.

Fire officials are still investigating the fire but suspect it was caused by a spark from a riding lawn mower.

Volunteer firefighters managed to keep the blaze contained to a one-acre lot owned by Everett and Ruth Verley. The couple’s daughter says the shed that burned down contained a truck, two boats, tools, furniture and lumber.
