GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — A volunteer firefighter was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic near an accident scene.

DeBusk Volunteer Fire Department Chief Regie Jones says firefighter Michael Wayne McKinney was hit by a pickup truck Sunday after he pushed a fellow firefighter to safety as the truck approached.

Twenty-7-year-old McKinney was treated at Takoma Regional Hospital for two sprained ankles and released.

The crew was directing traffic at the intersection of Newport Highway and Warrensburg Road after an earlier accident that caused a utility pole to fall and the highway to shut down.

Trooper David Good says the 78-year-old man driving the truck failed to see McKinney, but did not say if charges would be filed against the driver.
