Idaho firefighters return from Calif. blazes

The Associated Press

CALDWELL, Idaho — Nearly two dozen firefighters from southwestern Idaho spent more than a week fighting fires in California - and they are now homeward bound.

The firefighters, from Nampa, Caldwell, Middleton and Meridian, are driving back today to their home state.

They’re expected to arrive back in town between 5 and 6 p.m.

Nampa Fire Captain Terry Leighton says his favorite memory of the trip was helping people in burned-out trailer parks locate personal keepsakes amid the ruins.

He says, “Seeing the happy tears on their face was very memorable.”

Two weeks of wildfires destroyed more than 2,000 homes across a swath of Southern California stretching from north of Los Angeles to south of San Diego.

Idaho firefighters concentrated their efforts on San Diego County.
