MENLO PARK, Calif. — A Sept. 11 memorial honoring firefighters outside a fire station was vandalized Sunday.
A dozen out of 343 American flags were burned or damaged outside the Menlo Park Fire Protection District, reported the Mercury News.
Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said surveillance footage of the vandalism was captured and police are investigating the incident.
“I don’t get angry easily, but knowing that someone tried to burn not only our flag memorial, but a specific tribute to 343 fallen brothers, some of whom I personally knew, worked with and helped look for at Ground Zero … it’s a despicable act of disrespect and cowardice,” Schapelhouman said in a report.
The burned and damaged flags have been replaced.
