TUMBLER RIDGE, British Columbia — At least ten dead and 27 injured is the toll of the shooting that occurred in Tumbler Ridge, a remote mountain town in British Columbia, western Canada. Seven of the victims were shot inside a secondary school, while two others were found lifeless in a residence connected to the incident, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Among the injured, two are in serious condition.

The person believed to be responsible - who, according to an initial assessment by authorities, was “a woman in a dress with brown hair” - was found dead inside the school with what appears to be a self-inflicted wound.

The alarm for an “active shooter” was raised in the early afternoon, triggering a lockdown of the institution. During the intervention, police found six bodies inside the school; a seventh victim died during transport to the hospital. Authorities have confirmed that searches are underway in other homes in the area to verify any connections to the massacre.

Premier Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by what he called “horrible violence,” while British Columbia Premier David Eby spoke of an “unimaginable” act. Tumbler Ridge, which has about 2,400 inhabitants, is located more than 1,100 kilometers north of Vancouver. The municipality stated that it could not find “enough words to describe the pain” that has affected the community.
