Ind. fire department to hire 26 paramedics

The additions will increase the department’s ability to provide advanced life support rather than just basic services

The News Sentinel

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Mayor Tom Henry, Public Safety Director Rusty York and Fort Wayne Fire Chief Eric Lahey announced Tuesday the department will add 26 licensed paramedics to the department, with the application process opening Tuesday.

It’s an unprecedented move, which will put Fort Wayne on par with the services of South Bend and Indianapolis in providing advance life support rather than basic services, it was announced.

Applications are available at www.fortwaynefiredepartment.org. The application deadline is May 1. Applicants must hold either an Indiana paramedic license or a National Registry Paramedic Certification upon application. Applicants must be 21 years old by May 1 and cannot turn 36 years old by Jan. 1.

The 89th recruit class is expected to begin in early fall, with graduation in late December.
