CHARLLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A fire department is offering ambulance transports with no out-of-pocket costs for patients who have insurance.

NBC29 reported that the Charlottesville Fire Department purchased its first ambulance in 60 years and said they will not bill insured patients who live in the city for rides.

“We’re going to be insurance-only billing for city residents, so we’ll bill Medicare, Medicaid and or private insurance, so there’s no out-of-pocket cost for a city resident,” Fire Chief Andrew Baxter said.

Patients who are not from Charlottesville could be charged anywhere from $500 to $800, but can apply for a hardship waiver to help with the expenses.
