PAXTON, Neb. — Officials arrested a man this week who stole a number of U.S. flags from fire departments, cemeteries, schools and the American Legion.
Jake McPeak, 41, was arrested and charged with five counts of criminal mischief, criminal trespassing and theft of unlawful taking in Logan County, reported the NP Telegraph. Officials said it is likely that the three other counties where McPeak committed the crimes will press similar charges.
Paxton Volunteer Fire Chief Kyle Gartrell reported the first theft Friday after noticing the flag was missing from the pole.
“It’s very disrespectful, not only to the United States but to the veterans,” Chief Gartrell said. “Plus, it’s disrespectful to members of the fire department.”
McPeak is also accused of stealing four flags from the Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department, local businesses and schools.
Authorities said McPeak’s reasoning for stealing the flags was based on his discontent over the flags being torn and flown after dark.
The stolen flags have been placed into evidence inventory, but will be returned to their rightful owners as the case proceeds.
