AMARILLO, Texas — Amarillo firefighters stopped and "rescued" an American flag while returning to their firehouse.

According to a Facebook post by the department, Engine 12's A-shift crew had finished a medical call and noticed the neighbor’s flagpole was broken, KVII reported.

The firefighters went over, folded the flag and placed it on the porch for safekeeping.

The department referred to the US flag code and that "the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise."
