Firefighters dodge live ammunition at garage fire

When crews arrived, the garage was fully involved and a homeowner was trying to put out the blaze with a garden hose

FARMINGTON, Minn. — Firefighters dodged live ammunition while battling a garage fire Tuesday night.

Grand Forks Herald reported that firefighters, with the Farmington (Minn.) Fire Department, were called to the home after someone heard popping noises from the garage. When they went to check on it, they found fire.

When crews arrived, the garage was fully involved and a homeowner was trying to fight the fire with a garden hose. The ammunition in the garage started going off, forcing firefighters and the homeowner to back off.

“You can hear them going off,” Fire Chief Jim Larsen said. “It sounds like any other gun going off.”

The fire caused extensive damage to the garage and vehicle parked inside. There was also smoke and heat damage inside the house.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
