WELLESLEY, Mass. — First responders didn’t need spinach to rescue a pup named Popeye that fell through the ice on the Charles River in Wellesley on Tuesday.

Wellesley Police and fire as well as Dover police and fire responded to the call from a woman that reported her dog Popeye fell through the ice while they were out for a walk in Elm Bank shortly after noon.

Popeye, police said, was unable to crawl out of the Charles River due to the buildup of ice along the river bank.

The same ice and snow buildup hampered rescue attempts by first responders, police said.

After locating Popeye in the northeast corner of Elm Bank, Wellesley Fire Fighters conducted an ice water rescue and retrieved the dog from the frigid water.

Officers and firefighters began warming the dog up after the rescue.

Animal Control transported Popeye to an area animal hospital for treatment, police said.

Popeye was cold and scared, but is expected to be OK, authorities said.
